Lars will present key findings from the 2022 American Journalist Study, conducted with David Weaver and Cleve Wilhoit from IU. Based on a representative sample of 1,600 U.S. journalists, the study examines journalists’ backgrounds, attitudes, working conditions, and professional values.

By comparing results with five previous surveys (1971–2013), it reveals what has changed—and what has endured—over the past 50 years. The discussion will also address how journalists view the media’s role and responsibility in sustaining American democracy.

Lars Willnat

MA’91, PhD’92, John Ben Snow Endowed Research Professor in the Newhouse School at Syracuse University.

Lars Willnat is the John Ben Snow Endowed Research Professor in the Newhouse School at Syracuse University. His research focuses on global journalism studies, the effects of media on political attitudes and behaviors, and the media in China.

His teaching includes courses on political and global communication, media theory, quantitative research methods, and survey methods. He has lectured and conducted research in more than 30 countries and served as a Fulbright Scholar in Malaysia and South Korea. He has also been a guest professor at leading universities in Austria, China, Hong Kong, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, Poland, Singapore, South Korea, and Switzerland.
