Mary Catherine Phee was nominated to serve as the assistant secretary of state for African affairs. Phee is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, has served as the deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia, and is currently the deputy special representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation at the State Department.
