Sam Simmermaker retired from WCSI and White River Broadcasting in Columbus after spending 64 years there as a sports broadcaster. He has broadcast thousands of sporting events over his years spent in Columbus. He also served in the US Army Signal Corps. Simmermaker did play-by-play for Indianapolis Indians games for WTTV for five years. 

Simmermaker was named Indiana Sportscaster of the Year in 1976 and 1997 by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association and in 1971 by the Indiana Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. He was inducted into the ISSA Hall of Fame in 1998, and into the Indiana Associated Press Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 1991. Simmermaker also won the Best Sports Play-by-Play awards from Network Indiana in 2002 and 2004, and from the Indiana Broadcasters Association in 2005. 

In his retirement, Simmermaker plans to stay involved with the Indiana Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association and the North Carolina-based National Sports Media Association. (June 2024)
